Leaked development kit documents have surfaced online revealing detailed specifications for Sony's PlayStation 6 and Microsoft's next-generation Xbox, both currently targeting a holiday 2027 release. The documents, which appear to originate from an AMD partner briefing, outline hardware that represents a substantial generational leap over current consoles.

Shared Architecture

Both consoles are built on AMD's upcoming Zen 6 CPU architecture and RDNA 5 graphics architecture, manufactured on TSMC's 2nm process. The CPUs feature 8 cores and 16 threads with clock speeds up to 5.2 GHz, a significant upgrade over the Zen 2-based processors in current-gen consoles. The GPUs are where the real leap occurs, with the leaked specs indicating 48 to 56 compute units, potentially delivering over 25 teraflops of compute performance.

For comparison, the PlayStation 5 delivers 10.28 teraflops and the Xbox Series X delivers 12 teraflops. The next generation would represent more than a doubling of GPU performance, enabling native 4K gaming at 120 frames per second and potentially 8K gaming at 30 frames per second.

Memory and Storage

Both consoles reportedly feature 32GB of GDDR7 memory with 1.2TB/s bandwidth, a massive upgrade from the 16GB GDDR6 in current systems. Storage is said to use PCIe 5.0 NVMe SSDs with sequential read speeds of 14GB/s, doubling the already impressive PlayStation 5 SSD. The increased storage speed will virtually eliminate loading screens and enable more detailed open-world environments.

"If these specs are accurate, we are looking at a generational leap comparable to the jump from PS3 to PS4 in terms of raw capability," said a senior engine developer at a major studio.

PlayStation 6 Specifics

Sony's console, codenamed "Amethyst," reportedly includes a dedicated neural processing unit (NPU) for AI-assisted features. This could power real-time upscaling similar to NVIDIA's DLSS, procedural NPC behavior generation, and advanced haptic feedback processing. The DualSense controller is said to receive an update with improved adaptive triggers and a built-in gyroscope with lower latency.

Sony is also reportedly investing heavily in PlayStation VR 3, with the next headset featuring 4K-per-eye micro-OLED displays, eye tracking, and mixed reality passthrough. The headset would connect wirelessly to the console, addressing one of the main complaints about the current PSVR2.

Xbox Strategy

Microsoft's approach appears to diverge from a single console. The leaked documents reference two devices: a traditional console codenamed "Project Uther" and a handheld codenamed "Project Uther Lite." The traditional console matches the PlayStation 6 in raw specs, while the handheld is positioned as a lower-power device targeting 1080p gaming, competing with the Nintendo Switch 2 and Steam Deck.

This dual-device strategy aligns with Microsoft's broader ecosystem play, where Xbox games run across console, PC, and cloud. The company is also reportedly working on a next-generation cloud streaming infrastructure that would allow lower-spec devices to play next-gen games via streaming, though latency and bandwidth requirements remain challenges.
