Tesla's robotaxi ambitions have been met with skepticism for years, but the company is finally putting vehicles on public roads without safety drivers. The initial rollout covers Austin, Texas, and Phoenix, Arizona, with plans to expand to twelve more cities by year-end.

The Vehicle

The dedicated robotaxi vehicle, unveiled at Tesla's "We, Robot" event, features a two-seat cabin with no steering wheel or pedals. Production began at Gigafactory Texas in March 2026, and Tesla reports a run rate of 500 units per week. The vehicle relies on Tesla's Full Self-Driving computer v5 and an eight-camera vision system, controversially omitting lidar.

Initial fleet size in Austin is approximately 200 vehicles, operating within a geofenced area covering downtown and surrounding neighborhoods. Tesla emphasizes that the service area will expand gradually as the system accumulates data on edge cases specific to each zone.

Pricing and User Experience

Tesla is pricing rides at a flat $1 per mile during the launch phase, significantly undercutting traditional rideshare rates. Users hail rides through a dedicated Tesla app, and the experience is designed to be frictionless: the vehicle arrives, doors unlock via Bluetooth, and the passenger selects a destination on an in-cabin display.

"Our goal is to make autonomous transportation so affordable that car ownership becomes a choice, not a necessity," said Elon Musk during the launch event.

Regulatory Landscape

Tesla received permits from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration under its automated driving system exemption program, which allows up to 2,500 vehicles per year to operate without conventional controls. State-level approvals vary: Texas has been relatively permissive, while California's DMV requires additional testing data before granting a driverless deployment permit.

Safety advocates have raised concerns about Tesla's camera-only approach, particularly in adverse weather. Waymo, the current market leader in robotaxi services, uses a sensor suite that includes lidar and radar for redundancy. Tesla argues that its neural network, trained on billions of miles of real-world driving data, can handle conditions that sensor fusion struggles with.

Competitive Position

Waymo currently operates driverless ride-hailing in Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Austin, with over 150,000 paid rides per week. Cruise, after a challenging 2024, has resumed testing in Phoenix and Dallas. Tesla enters a market that is no longer unoccupied, and its success will depend on scaling rapidly while maintaining a safety record that satisfies regulators and the public alike.
